Cold Plunge Ownership 101

Cold plunging, or deliberate cold exposure, has gained significant popularity for its purported health benefits, including reduced inflammation, improved circulation, and enhanced mental resilience. If you’re considering the investment of owning your own cold plunge, preparation is key to ensuring a safe, effective, and sustainable experience.

I. Understanding the Commitment

We understand that owning a cold plunge is more than just a purchase; it’s a commitment to a new habit and the responsibility of maintaining specialized equipment.

Health Considerations

Before starting regular cold exposure, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have pre-existing conditions. Here is a short check list of the top conditions to review.

  • Cardiovascular Issues: Cold exposure can dramatically raise heart rate and blood pressure, posing risks for individuals with heart conditions, high blood pressure, or a history of stroke.
  • Pregnancy: Cold plunging is generally not recommended during pregnancy.
  • Raynaud’s Phenomenon or Extreme Cold Sensitivity: These conditions may be exacerbated by cold water immersion.
  • Open Wounds/Infections: Avoid plunging if you have open cuts or active infections.

II. Site and Installation Preparation

Proper placement is essential for the longevity of your unit and your comfort. Consult with our wellness experts so they can provide recommendations and assistance during this part of your planning.

Location Requirements

  • Surface: The plunge must be placed on a flat, level, and structurally sound surface (e.g., concrete slab, reinforced deck). A full plunge can weigh thousands of pounds.
  • Drainage: Choose a location that allows for easy drainage and where water run-off will not cause damage or pooling.
  • Weather Protection: If placed outdoors, consider protection from direct sunlight (which increases cooling effort) and heavy rain/snow. A covered patio or pergola is ideal.
  • Power Access: A dedicated, weatherproof GFCI-protected electrical outlet near the unit is required for safety and functionality.

Water Source

  • Identify a reliable and accessible water source (e.g., a hose spigot) for filling the unit and occasional top-offs.

III. Establishing Maintenance Protocols

Regular maintenance is non-negotiable for keeping the water clean and the equipment functioning so you can reap the benefits of your cold plunge. You’re not on your own – we’re always here to help!

Water Quality Management

  • Keeping Water Clean: Does the thought of making sure your water stays clean sound daunting? It’s not. The Vigor Cold Plunge cold plunge uses a built-in UV-C lamp to help keep water clean with minimal effort. To maintain water quality, regularly test and balance the water using a 5-way test strip. Sanitize weekly (and after heavy use) with 2 teaspoons of granular chlorine (sodium dichlor) to maintain levels between 1–3 ppm.
  • Changing The Water: To maintain clean and fresh water, you should drain and refill your cold plunge every 3-6 months.
  • Filter Cleaning/Replacement: We’ll provide you with instructions and best practices for routine filter cleaning and replacement. Plus, we have filters in stock and a staff that can support you in your maintenance journey.

System Checks

  • Temperature Calibration: Periodically check the actual water temperature against the display reading.
  • Visual Inspection: Regularly inspect the unit, cover, hoses, and connections for leaks or signs of wear.

V. Developing a Plunge Routine

Preparation includes planning the practical aspects of your sessions.

  • Warm-Up/Cool-Down: Plan for a quick warm-up area (e.g., a warm towel, robe, or nearby heater) for immediate use post-plunge.
  • Safety: Never plunge alone, especially when first starting out. Keep a non-slip mat next to the tub.
  • Duration and Frequency: Start with short plunges (30 seconds to 1 minute) and gradually increase the duration as tolerated. Most protocols recommend 3-10 minutes, 3-5 times per week.
